UHMG launched a USAID/Uganda Social Marketing Activity (SMA) in Eastern Uganda to improve equity and accessibility to health services. The Project will cover 16 districts in the region and will work through the private sector to promote condom use, deliver Maternal and child health commodities to reduce maternal and child mortality.
The regional launch held on March 23, 2016 under the theme “Improving Equity and Access to Quality Products and Services” brought together different stakeholders in the region to orient the district leaders and other stakeholders on the scope of work for the SMA project.
Speaking at the meeting, the Uganda Health Marketing Group Managing Director, Joyce Tamale noted that the project would go a long way to impact the lives of all Ugandans.
“As UHMG, we provide products, run behaviour change communication campaigns and offer services to impact health lives," Joyce said.
To deliver the activity, UHMG and PACE will work closely with the Ministry of Health, local government and local health franchises – the Good Life Clinics network (GLCs) and Profam.
"At UHMG, our aim is to bring about good health to all Ugandans through good life clinics network," Prof. George Kirya, UHMG board member said. Adding, “As a board, we have approved setting up of regional hubs to bring services closer to the people."
The Regional hubs are supposed to be one stop centres to deliver integrated Reproductive Health services
Denis Ahairwe, the Chief of Party SMA in his remarks at the launch emphasised the need for family planning to curb population growth rate. He further noted that the project would use the total market approach to ensure last mile reach.
"SMA will use the Total Market Approach to ensure health service delivery to the last mile user,” Denis noted.
SMA is an overarching four year project supported by USAID to reduce new HIV infection infections, total fertility, maternal and child mortality, malnutrition and mortality due to malaria among women and men in 66 districts.
It is implemented by Uganda Health Marketing Group (UHMG) as a prime, and Program for Accelerated Health Communication and Education (PACE) as a sub-award.
