As UHMG marks 10 years of delivering Good Life to all Ugandans, the organization is  looking for more sustainable ways of building on its work in supporting Health interventions in Uganda.  UHMG will be launching the “Good Life Fund” on 30th September 2016.

 

 

 

What is the “Good Life Fund”?  A sustainable fundraising mechanism that  will pool locally generated financial resources to support priority health interventions including :

  • Control of Hemorrhage that contributes to 42% of Maternal deaths

  • Supporting major causes of Child morbidity and mortality

  • Arresting  the rising prevalence of Non communicable diseases (NCDs) currently contributing to 27% of all mortality in Uganda.

 

 

Key Facts and what the Good Life Fund will do!

 

Maternal Child Health

  • The top causes of Maternal Mortality are preventable. Hemorrhage (42%) Pregnancy related hypertension (12%) Post-partum sepsis (11%).

  • 90 children of the 1000 born die before their fifth birthday, 54/1000 before their first birthday while 27/1000 babies die within 28 days of being born. The commonest causes of death are pneumonia, malaria, diarrhea, prematurity and sepsis.

 

Non-communicable Diseases

  • Uganda Non Communicable Disease (NCD) related morbidity and Mortality has been on the rise since the year 2000.

  • According to WHO Uganda country profile, NCDS were responsible for 27% of all deaths in 2014.

  • The NCDs are attributed to 4 main risky life styles including; Tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

  • Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide,  for which a vaccine is now available.

 

 

Goodlife Fund Interventions

  • With guidance from the Ministry of Health, through the Supply Chain unit of UHMG the fund will initially support in availing commodities for emergency obstetric care to prevent MCH deaths.

  • Support Health education and promotion to create  awareness to address NCDs

  • Cervical Cancer: For the medium term, the Good Life Fund will explore HPV vaccination program amongst adolescents in disadvantaged communities.

  • Support diagnostic measures  through outreaches and Health camps

Prof. George B. Kirya

Prof. Kirya is one of the Founder Members of Uganda Health Marketing Group (UHMG). He is a Physician, Microbiologist, and Diplomat who served as Ugandan High Commissioner for the UK for many years. Prof. Kirya also served as Chairman of Uganda Health Services Commission for 5 years and as a Makerere University Vice Chancellor.
