By working with partners, UNFPA remains committed to its mandate of ensuring that sexual reproductive and maternal health needs of women and girls are not overlooked during emergencies. Ensuring the health and safety of women is not only a moral obligation; it is also a strategic investment in vulnerability reduction that improves health and wellbeing. According to the UNHCR’s annual Global Trend report, by the end of 2015, Uganda was hosting 512,968 refugees and asylum-seekers, the highest number in the country’s history. Uganda has now become the 8th-largest refugee hosting country in the world and the third largest refugee-hosting country in Africa. When measured against the size of a country’s economy (GDP per person), Uganda is the fourth-largest refugee-hosting country.

On Thursday 6th,July 2017 UNFPA together with UNCHR handed over consignments of emergency reproductive health kits to the office of the prime minister to be used in refugee settlements a cross the country. During the handover, the UNFPA Uganda Country Representative noted that partnerships are critical in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and that that real development starts with government stewardship and ownership in order to advance the SDGs.

“Our reproductive health and family planning services remain mainly urban-based yet the majority of our women are in rural areas, some of them quite remote with poor accessibility. We must do all we can to ensure that women do not die so needlessly,” UHMG Managing Director noted.

Majority of refugees are women and children with aggravated health needs due to the circumstances they found themselves in. UNFPA places an irreplaceable role in protecting vulnerable women and girls in ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health to promote reproductive rights, reduce maternal mortality among the refugee populations as well as the host communities.
Through the third party logistics handling UNFPA partnered with UHMG to undertake clearance, warehousing and distribution of family planning commodities to over one thousand health facilities in the country including refugee camps.
